LONG TAIL KEYWORDS
While you are combing the net searching for answers to your many questions, you will without a doubt come across the phrase "long tail" keyword. Hmmmm….if one word is a single keyword then a long tail keyword must be similar to a tail….extending from the body of the keyword. You're right. Defining short and long tail keywords is quite simple-by counting the number of words. Short-tail keywords are usually 1-2 words and long tail keywords are usually 3-6 words in length.
WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?
Finding a single keyword is fairly easy. You can go to one of the keyword suggestion tool sites, enter a word, and out comes tons of words for you to choose from. You can even enter one of those words and find even more.
Long tail keywords are a little different. There are programs to help you find long tail keywords such as HitTail (not free). You can also do this with Google Analytics. Another option is to use (and it's free) is your brain. Ask friends and family members. Start making a list.
Keep in mind that it long tail keywords may not be site-friendly because grouping certain words together may not fit well with the flow of things.
Long tail keywords are often used to focus one specific market, so while you may not get bombarded with traffic, those who do come to your site are looking for something specific and those are usually buyers.
Here's an example:
Let's say you are selling cherry scented candles. The obvious keyword would be "candle." Well, candle as a keywords covers just about everyone looking for any kind of candles-birthday, pillar, scented, tea light-the list goes on and on. Not to mention that this particular keyword is probably a bit pricey because the high-ranking competitors are bound to have it.
Now, let's say someone is looking for scented candles. More than likely that are going to type in what? Scented candle.
Let's take is one step further. Someone is looking for a particular scented candle, cherry for instance. They are, more than likely going to type in what? CHERRY SCENTED CANDLES.
With a single keyword such as candles, you may capture them as a viewer. With a keyword phrase (2-3 words) such as scented candles, you may capture them as a viewer, but with a long tail keyword such as "cherry scented candle," guess what, you site is going to come up and since they are searching for something specific the chances of them buying from you are much greater and the PPC cost is probably not as high.
If you take a quick look at Google AdWords, you will see that "candle" is listed at $1.14 (CPC) Cost per click and scented candles is listed at $1.80 CPC.
Now take a look at cherry scented candle. It has a CPC of $.05. What a difference, right!
All it takes is a little creative thinking on your part. You'd be surprised at the ideas you can come up with.
